West Cornwall Golf Course was founded in 1889 by a group of enthusiasts led by the Reverend Tyack. The legendary figure Jim Barnes was born in Lelant and learned his golf on the links before becoming the inaugural winner of the US PGA Championship in 1916, winning it again in 1919. He went on to win the US Open in 1921 and The Open Championship in 1925. Many Cornwall County Champion members of the club have honed their skills here at West Cornwall.
